The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror Merging Survival Horror with Among Us Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several fascinating future games, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique game where a girl harboring multiple personalities within her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Within her reside four distinct souls, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed footage, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie hospital, while additional clips show the main character exploring a abandoned church.
A World of Individual Horror
"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that appear minor to other people can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are specific to every individual."
The core mechanic involves managing whichever soul emerges at a particular time. However, these identities will change involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the protagonist one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by orderlies who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the waiting room have large blooms where their heads should be. Flowers are an ever-present element, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the souls claims that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."
After a player believes a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. However, because each soul can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The final entity standing might be a fraud. In any case, your choices are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
