The German coach, who left Anfield in 2024, has suggested that a future comeback is something that could happen. The 58-year-old, after a transformative near-decade reign which brought Champions League success and the Premier League crown for three decades, now holds positions in a global football capacity for Red Bull and as an advisor for the DFL.
Supporters’ Hopes and Klopp’s Candid Remarks
They secured England's top flight under Arne Slot, yet numerous supporters holding him in high esteem would embrace the possibility that he may eventually return. Speaking candidly, he shared with the podcast host: “I said I will never coach another team within the country. Therefore if then it’s Liverpool...yes. It's plausible.”
“At 58 years old, that means the choice could be mine down the line, who knows. Is a decision required immediately? If so, I wouldn't return. Fortunately, no such pressure exists. I can just see how things unfold.”
Conditions for a Comeback
Pressed on what circumstances must arise to draw him back to the dugout, he confessed he was not instantly drawn for a comeback. “I'm not entirely sure, My present work fulfills me,” he stated. “I don’t miss coaching; I don’t miss standing in the rain for two-and-a-half or three hours; No need for interviews four times, three times a week or having 10-12 interviews a week.
“The locker room isn't missed per se, but sitting in a restaurant with the players enjoying conversation, that’s nice. We won a lot of games meaning regularly great spirits at the club. Remaining with me is Virgil [Van Dijk’s] laugh vividly recalled to illustrate.”
Praise for His Successor
Klopp was full of praise for his successor, praising him for the adjustments that won the league last campaign. Liverpool have lost four consecutive matches across various tournaments following significant transfers, though he denied the suggestion that it might signal a slump.
“[Liverpool have] a phenomenal forward in Flo[rian] Wirtz, doubters will be silenced if you use the wrong words. He’s an incredible talent. Ekitike, superb talent. This is a well-built thoughtfully assembled roster. You don’t have to worry about Liverpool, they will be fine.”
Heartfelt Words for the Late Forward
Klopp also spoke emotionally regarding the passing of Diogo Jota, a 2020 acquisition during his tenure, along with the consequences on Liverpool. The Portugal international lost his life in a vehicle collision with his brother this past summer.
“How do you replace somebody like Diogo? This isn't just regarding the player himself, his personality mattered. I struggle to conceive the team environment absent his presence. Putting it into words is tough regarding this. A profound tragedy for the entire squad also. No one within the club would cite it as an excuse yet it's the reality. Entering the changing area where his spirit remains. Handling this individually is challenging. Overwhelming.”
