Red Cross Assists Militant Group in Search for Remains of Captives in Gaza

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) stated that its personnel joined Hamas officials into areas of Gaza currently controlled by IDF authority to support the search for the bodies of Israeli hostages.

Truce Terms and Hostage Remains Handover

As part of the truce negotiated by the United States, which took effect on 10 October, Hamas is required to return the remains of all captives promptly. As a reciprocal measure, the Israeli government has consented to hand over the remains of 15 Palestinians for every Israeli body returned.

The organization has to date returned the bodies of fifteen of those held captive but zero in the past five days, as a portion of those remains are believed to be in areas beyond the yellow line designating Gaza’s ceasefire.

ICRC Involvement as Neutral Intermediary

“Upon the appeal of the involved sides, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) accompanied a party to the conflict as the party searched for the bodies of the deceased individuals past the IDF-designated ‘yellow boundary’,” said a representative for the committee.

She continued: “The parties to the hostilities established the modalities of the mission and delegated the ICRC to serve as a neutral intermediary. We was not involved in the discussions.”

The official further explained: “Our team was did not participate in the search for the bodies nor does it take part in the physical recovery of remains.”

US Demand and Regional Recovery Operations

Recently, the American leader issued a two-day demand to the militant group. “They is going to have to start handing over the remains of the hostages who died, including American citizens, promptly, or the additional nations involved in this great peace will intervene,” he wrote on his social‑media platform.

When the 48-hour deadline approached, the group, accompanied by the Red Cross, teamed up with teams from Egypt, who were authorised by Israeli authorities to search for bodies beyond the boundary indicating the withdrawal of troops inside the territory. An official representative said the delegation would use heavy machinery and vehicles in the operation.

This development was corroborated by an source within Israel, who told local press that Hamas representatives had been allowed to access sections of the region under military authority to search for the bodies of hostages, together with Egyptian and ICRC teams.

“For this purpose, Hamas members were permitted to cross the designated boundary,” the source was cited as saying.

Video published by a regional network appeared to show members of a Hamas unit – belonging to the group’s military wing tasked with guarding captives – escorting a Red Cross vehicle in a specific location close to Rafah, which is beyond Israeli military control.

Difficulties in Locating Captive Remains

The search for the bodies of Israeli hostages has turned into one of the most sensitive issues in the ceasefire agreed between the parties. However, the effort to locate the remains has been difficult from the beginning, given the existence of an estimated 60m tonnes of debris across the territory, where, according to local health authorities, at least 10,000 Palestinians are recorded as missing, buried under the debris.

Conflicting Claims on Remains Whereabouts

Hamas has stated it does not know the precise locations of all the remains, saying it has been unable to communicate with a number of its units that had been detaining the captives and were reportedly eliminated during Israeli bombardments.

In contrast, an official representative asserted that the organization was aware of the locations of the remains. “Should the group exerted greater effort, they would be able to recover the bodies of our hostages,” the official said.

US Stance and Weapons Surrender Discussions

Although the American leader has conceded that a portion of the remains are hard to access, he said that “others they can return immediately and, for unknown reasons, they are failing to do so.”

“It may have to do with the disarming of the group,” he added.

Washington has said it has obtained assurances from Hamas that the faction will surrender its arms, though no specific schedule has been established. They remains reluctant to surrender its weapons without firm assurances about the future of its members.
