The co-founders of the famous frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has announced that parent company Unilever stopped the introduction of an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.

Ben Cohen, who established the business alongside Jerry Greenfield, disclosed how he will independently develop this new flavor as part of a personal collection showcasing causes the company was prevented from addressing publicly.

Ongoing Conflict Between Founders versus Parent Company

This latest development deepens the ongoing tension among the world-famous ice cream maker and Unilever, the British consumer goods giant that has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.

The co-founders have asserted that Unilever and their ice cream division Magnum unlawfully blocked their company against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".

Watermelon Sorbet becoming a Symbol of Solidarity

Mr. Cohen stated via an Instagram video how he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas for the product's name plus potential ingredients.

“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen stated from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.”

The watermelon has emerged as an emblem of support for the Palestinian people due to its colors, which mirror those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Previous Activism and Current Changes

In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of its products in areas under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever selling their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing ongoing distribution in the occupied West Bank.

The new product line is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand which was first established in 2016 to support former US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".

Management Shifts and Future Plans

Mr. Cohen stated how he will create other frozen dessert varieties that address issues that Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly due to Unilever.

This development comes after partner Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at the company in September, following decades with the organization, citing worries that its independence had been compromised after corporate moves to restrict their advocacy work.

At that time, Mr. Cohen remarked that “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."

"My heart compels me to keep working within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy so that the company can actualise the social mission, the values which established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he told media outlets.
