Are You Able to Solve This? The Forgotten Netherlands Creation That Forged the Modern Globe
One can find many candidates to claim the designation as “planet’s greatest innovation.” The circular axle. The movable type. The combustion motor.
As per a recent publication, however, that honor should go to a mechanised timber mill conceived through Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Prior to mechanised sawing, constructing a modest merchant vessel necessitated around 10 sawyers working over 90 days,” notes the author. “With wind-driven lumber mills, the same amount of processed timber might be manufactured in less than a week.”
Thanks to this speedy automated saw, that converted logs into planks using virtually no manual labor, Dutch builders were able to build ships more quickly than any other nation, an advantage that sparked a century of Dutch naval, economic and cultural dominance in Europe and the world.
The Original Genuine Industrial Machine
Corneliszoon’s sawmill, argues the writer, represented “humanity’s initial true factory apparatus.” A wind turbine turned a wheel. A single part transformed the rotary motion to up-and-down action for the saw. Another component changed that same spinning motion into a sideway’s movement advancing the timber toward the blade. A geared mechanism moved the log ahead a measured step per stroke.
“Every component seemed simple by itself. Corneliszoon’s brilliance lay in how to combine them in order that they acted within a precisely synchronized sequence, sawing on every downward motion while advancing with each upward motion. This constituted a remarkably intelligent application of basic parts.”
